The Hardware

Part 1 / Part 2

Here is what you need to get started on the Hardware:
- An old, banged up Laptop, somewhat working, capable to boot Linux (from FDD, HDD, CDROM, USB).
- Screwdrivers
- Patience
And most IMPORTANT:
- enough beer and coffee to get through this

Now remember, these laptops are build so you cannot take them apart easily. For some reasons, half of all the screws are hidden behind secret plastic covers, underneath the batter or wherever you cannot find them.
For the Toshiba model I had (SATELLITE 4080XCDT) I started by taking off the keyboard (image above). That didn't do much good, until I found out how to rip the laptop into two pieces.

*sigh* I thought the LCD would come off by itself.

Since I was not able to remove the LCD, I had to see how to get it out of the upper half of the laptop. I first unscrewed every screw I found on the display, and then lifted the cover while squeezing a screwdriver between the two plastic shells.

Long story short, it finally came off.

To the left you see the broken hinge (this is why I got the laptop cheap ;-) ).

You can also see the display backlight supply (huhu, dangerous, don't touch my picture frame ;-) ).

So there it was, the cover of the LCD gone. So far so good, once here I might as well remove the whole thing from its plastic.
