San Francisco Presidio and Golden Gate
|
We went to San Francisco twice last weekend, in anticipation of a big project I am working on and hope to complete before summer. I photographed the Presidio and Fort Point. I was very lucky, since Fort Point celebrated Living History Days with civil war actors in period customs. It was a lot of fun and while we were there, I also photographed some of the spectacular views you can find at the Presidio and the Main Post, from where the Presidio grew to its current spread. I parked my car and walked across the Golden Gate Bridge to boost my Golden Gate Portfolio. Both locations are a lot of fun to discover and the pictures really turned out exceptional (all shot with the Canon 7D). Check them out and come back for more, the project is far from done. |

7D Noise
Hello Andre,
Very good looking pictures! I'm thinking about buying the 7D myself, but at the same time I'm also contemplating buying a full frame camera, because this will have better noice characteristics. What are your experiences with noise? Looking at the pictures, it seems that your photo's from the band and from the Civil War re-enactor are quite noisy, so I was wondering what you think of them in their normal size.
Thanks!
Steve
Noise
Hello Steve,
the noise of the 7D is worse than the 5DM2. The image of the civil war guy is artificial. The processing actually clipped the shadows and added noise to make it look more authentic. The band has some noise in the background, because I was forced to shoot at high ISO.
I just returned from a trip to San Diego where I went inside two submarines and the aircraft carrier. I shot some images with ISO settings of 6400 and even a couple with 12800. The 6400 are still ok, especially after running them through Topaz DeNoise.
I don't pixel peep much anymore though. As a matter of fact, I would compare the cameras in terms of:
-Noise (The 5DM2 is clearly better)
-Crop Factor Advantage (I get better reach with a 400mm lens that you get on a Full frame with a 600mm lens, which means I save a lot of money on glass)
-Price
-Shooting Speed (I haven't had any real need for the 8 frames per second yet)
Remember that the smaller sensor is also less demanding on lens performance. The sharpness falloff towards the edges will be much less pronounced.
I won't tell you what to buy though. I am o.k. with the noise and on the review page you can see some example images I shot with ISO 12800. Noise shows less in prints than it does on the screen and it doesn't really take away from the overall impression a photograph makes.
Super
Zwei wunderschöne Fotos besonders das erste finde ich extrem ausdrucksstark, große gratulation.
